Collector´s Choice

In this special exhibition, we bring together the outstanding holdings of the Curth Collection with new works by the acclaimed artists Sali Muller and Justin Bower, presented within the unique atmosphere of the collection’s private rooms.

Sali Muller is currently experiencing tremendous interest in her multimedia works—driven not least by her museum exhibitions over the past year (Kunstmuseum Heidenheim, Museum für Konkrete Kunst, Times Art Museum Chengdu), the growing demand for women artists, and her exceptional sensitivity to the spirit of the times. In her practice, Muller references the Light and Space movement that emerged in California in the 1960s, translating its principles into a contemporary language and establishing herself as a pioneer of ultra-contemporary art. It is therefore no surprise that her works are already held in numerous private and public collections, and that her international presence continues to expand. Sali Muller exhibits with galleries in France, Italy, Belgium, and the United States, among others.

The paintings of American artist Justin Bower speak for themselves—so powerful that words can seem unnecessary. Yet if one asks why his works fascinate us, and why we instinctively recognise them as masterpieces, three factors stand out. First, his paintings carry a profound art-historical depth. We can identify influences ranging from Francis Bacon and Frank Stella to Kazimir Malevich, yet never a trace of imitation. Instead, Bower takes up the ideas and intentions of these predecessors and confronts them with contemporary social progress and transformation. Added to this is his unmistakable command of material: his brushwork is both precise and disruptive, yet never feels spontaneous or unconsidered.

The third—and perhaps most decisive—criterion by which we recognise a masterpiece is its singularity. Once you have seen a Bower, you will recognise it again—wherever in the world you encounter it.

Special highlights of the exhibition:

  • Never before have so many works by American artist Justin Bower been shown in a single exhibition in Europe.

  • We are honoured to be the first gallery to present a selection from Sali Muller’s “Spectra” series.

  • Alongside Justin Bower’s signature large-scale paintings, the exhibition will also feature smaller works as well as chalk/acrylic/oil drawings.

  • Only unique works will be exhibited.
